First Hand: Women Artists Exhibition. Drop-in Weekdays during the Fringe.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

This exhibition combines the work of 4 award-winning international artists who have had residencies at Art27.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maryam Yahia Mohamed\u2019s<\/b> sculptural works evokes the vibrant and distinctive cultural heritage of Sudanese and North African identity.<\/p>\n

Laleh Sherkat<\/b>, Iranian street and documentary photographer, portrays the early days of the Iran\/Iraq war as seen through her eyes as a young women witnessing huge societal change.<\/p>\n

Marta Adamowicz<\/b>, rediscovers her roots through the world of Slavic mythology and explores how art can be a tool of social change.<\/p>\n

Shatha Altowai<\/b>, paintings movingly represents the emotional world of women surviving under threat in Yemen throughout the war.<\/p>\n

Laleh Sherkat<\/p>\n

Laleh Sherkat is an acclaimed Iranian photographer and former photojournalist. She is renowned for being one of the first women to document the Iran-Iraq war and the first to photograph female prisoners in Iran.<\/p>\n

She is a founding member of the Iranian Photography Society and has juried and curated many photography exhibitions and competitions in Iran and Scotland.<\/p>\n

The photographs presented in the exhibition come from the project
\nWe are Southside which was created as part of Leleh’s residency with Art27scotland. The whole project was exhibited as a solo show in Southside Community Centre in Edinburgh from February until May 2022. This exhibition is its iteration presenting a selection of the images in the form of mounted prints and as an artist’s portfolio.<\/p>\n

The photographer shows us the everyday street scenes; passers-by caught in their daily errands stopped for a split second. Through Laleh’s images, the audience can witness those fleeting moments to learn about the richness of the surroundings and remember that even a brief meeting with a stranger can be a valuable moment of connection.<\/p>\n
