Cultural Rights World Café

Part of the Festival of Migration collection Come to the World Cafe – we will discuss what happens to people’s culture when they migrate to another country & all aspects of migration.

About this event

What is a World Café? A world café is a good, simple process for bringing people together around questions that matter. We believe that people can work together no matter who they are, where they are from and what they know – we are all equal and we are all valuable, and by talking together we can use our collective wisdom to shape the future another way. Edinburgh is Scotland’s most diverse city and many people with experience of migration wonder how to enjoy and celebrate their own culture, in their own way. They wonder how to belong to two places at the same time. They wonder how to meet and interact with people from other cultures and overcome the stereotypes and assumptions that often create barriers. Why is this world café important? According to the global organisation United Cities and Local Government group, by 2050 one third of the world’s population will live in cities. Migration has always been a reality and with economic globalisation and climate change, it will only increase. A large part of the hostile anti-migrant language from UK Government is about culture – they say that people who come here don’t share the same values as people in UK. None of this is true but it is easy to see how cultural heritage can be used as a weapon rather than a celebration of our identities. Identity is not a fixed entity, it moves and changes as we grow, as we travel, as we make homes, and we adapt. Why we want you to come to the World Café! Without your voice we can’t really talk about what’s important to our communities, our city, or our identity in a true way. We need your thoughts, experiences, and ideas to help us map a way towards a home and a city where everyone’s culture is celebrated and respected, and where our cultural lives become the glue that holds us in peace together for the future. The conversation will be facilitated, and you are free to join in in whatever way is best for you. The world café is a relaxed and safe space for everyone. There will be coffee and snacks to keep you going!! See you there!!
