Riwaa Joma is a Palestinian embroidery artist based in Edinburgh. She leads a local women’s Tatreez group, hosted by Art27 Scotland, who regularly meet to learn and practice the art of Tatreez. The group is a supportive space where Palestinian women who regularly meet to has created a supportive space where Palestinian women in Scotland and their allies connect, share stories, and strengthen their bond to Palestinian culture and heritage. Through this work, they not only preserve a centuries-old tradition but also build community, emotional resilience, and a sense of belonging. Tatreez, the intricate and symbolic art of Palestinian embroidery, is more than decoration—it is a living language of resistance, identity, and heritage. For generations, Palestinian women have stitched stories of land, family, love, and struggle into fabric, preserving culture and reclaiming space in the face of displacement. The group’s work was showcased as part of Art27’s Culture=Life Festival in the Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh.
